Teaching

The Center for Peace and Conflict Studies is part of Seton Hall University’s School of Diplomacy and International Relations, located in South Orange, New Jersey. The School of Diplomacy is one of pioneering schools in the United States to offer graduate specializations in negotiation and conflict management. The School offers two master’s degree specializations in peace and conflict related areas. These include the M.A., and the Executive M.S. and Online Executive M.S. programs.

Global Negotiation and Conflict Management

This specialization aims to empower students in the roles of negotiator, mediator, facilitator, and problem-solver. By placing negotiations in the context of global politics and cultures, this specialization aims to help students explore the role of negotiation in preventing, managing and resolving conflicts as well as post conflict peacebuilding. The courses employ (class-based and online) simulations and negotiation role plays to help students develop practical knowledge and skills other than a solid academic and theoretical background. The ability to persuade and build consensus is invaluable for students seeking careers in the diplomatic service, government, international organizations, NGOs and within the field of advocacy.

Post-Conflict State Reconstruction and Sustainability

Continuing and mounting conflicts are unsettling various parts of the world, creating both institutional and socio-economic hardships. There also has been an increase in the local and international stakeholders investing resources towards the peaceful resolution of these conflicts. This has led to a massive surge in the demand for skilled professionals with specialized knowledge and training in post-conflict reconstruction. The courses under this specialization include Institutions of Post-Conflict Governance, Civil Conflict and Development, and Fieldwork in Post-Conflict Societies among others.

In addition to the M.A. and M.S. program specializations, the School of Diplomacy also offers a Graduate Certificate program in Post-Conflict State Reconstruction and Sustainability.

Post-Conflict State Reconstruction and Sustainability

This graduate online certificate program, is one of the first of its kind in the region, designed for professionals and recent bachelor’s degree graduates who want to explore a career path or develop new skills without committing to a full master’s degree. This online certificate program is especially useful for international agency staff, UN practitioners, government civilian planners, employees of nongovernmental organizations, educators and professionals responsible for and interested in solving conflicts.
